Kid Kwip #1-2

My kids say some funny stuff a lot of days that just leave me shaking my head and laughing to myself. So, I'm going to start posting them when I remember. Here's a couple from the past few days, both from Kylee:

1. (As we're cleaning her room) "Mom, just because it's inside out doesn't mean it's dirty. It just means you tried it on to see if it still fits."
2. (Today, while playing outside in 85+ degree weather, after she asked if I would fix grilled cheese for lunch)
Me: "Are you sure you want something hot for lunch when it's so hot outside?"

Kylee: "Mom - We're starving and cold!"

Today I am......

Today I am:

mowing and weed-eating our yard
quilting at least one quilt
finishing the center of my Basket BOM
sending out weekend orders
searching for that air bed....I know it's here somewhere
cleaning house
finishing laundry
entertaining 3 kids (you want to take a hike up the mountain, really? How about a movie?.......with popcorn?)
eating birthday cake (my brother's) for dinner (oh well, I mowed the yard today, and hiked a mountain)

Tent Camping or Bust

I think I've mentioned that we always try to take the kids tent camping on the lake at least once a year. My parents used to take us, and as kids we had some great times. Usually, we don't end up doing this over a holiday, but this year we're trying out the 4th of July weekend.

Yesterday, we spent a relaxing "adult day" on the lake, with just one very happy, very calm 16 month old who entertains himself. (Yes, you're right, so unlike our three animals, whoops, children) We used the day to scope out our favorite camping spots, all of which were taken. So, we resorted to leaving our stuff at the best one we could find and we're hoping that next Thursday we might be able to move to a better one.

Sure, camping's fun (sort of), but after looking all over for a spot, all I could think about was how much work it is. Our boat is sure to be so loaded next Thursday, we'll be lucky not to make two trips. Then there's the packing, the cooking, the sleeping in a tent, the sunscreen, the mosquitoes, and trying not to cover the front of the boat with mud every time we get in, not to mention being with 3 kids with nowhere to run away. All easier said than done. Hmmmmmm.........I was starting to rethink this whole thing. Maybe driving down for a couple days would be better than staying over night, even at $4.00+ a gallon.

And then I remembered that I had already told the kids we were going camping. When I reminded Monte of this, he said "Yeah, YOU told them." I remembered how they ask every 3 hours if it's time to go boat camping yet? and I realized we were committed. They may act like animals, but I couldn't disappoint.

So, let the packing begin! Today marks the start of a nearly week long marathon of packing, cleaning, shopping, and quilting (to stay caught up), all in the name of tent camping. Did you ever doubt I'm crazy?

Kids and Bathroom Doors

Why is it that the shutting of the bathroom door is like a dog whistle for kids? It doesn't matter if I'm only closing the door to use the mirror behind it. It still results in someone under the age of 18 knocking on the other side, "Mom!?......" and inevitably throwing the door into me just as I'm carefully applying my eyeliner or mascara.

This morning, Will was insisting on a bath instead of a shower. Since Will's "bath" means filling the bathtub up with every drop from our hot water heater, grabbing every toy within reach, and playing for hours while covering every inch of the floor, walls, and sometimes the ceiling with water, there was no way we had time for that. After telling Will he was going to take a shower, I hurried into the bathroom to take my own shower.

As soon as I closed the door, Will began yelling through it.

"Mom, I want a bath!"

Even my repeated cries of "I can't hear you" didn't stop him. Instead, he continued hollering about a bath and began kicking the door for emphasis. I opened the door to find him on the floor, crying about a bath, with his legs against the door for easy kicking.

"Will," I said, "Get your butt in the bath before I beat it."

He took off faster than greased lightning, leaving me standing in the doorway and wondering why my empty threats suddenly worked. Usually threats of beating elicit nothing more than laughter. So, why did he take off so fast, I wondered?

Well, I had only to rethink exactly what I had said to figure that one out. The sound of the bath tub filling made me realize that I'd said "Get your butt in the bath." Thinking I had finally given in, Will had taken off before I could change my mind.

Darn, fooled by a 4 year old, again!

Inspiration Quilt

My sister made this quilt using the Inspiration III fat quarter packet, plus border and background. The quilt is from the Laps From Fats 3 book. The Inspiration line is a gorgeous line that supports ovarian cancer research and awareness.
