National Quilting Day

Did you know that the 3rd Saturday in March is officially National Quilting Day? So, that means you should be holed up in your sewing room all day, making some major progress on multiple projects! Yeah right, but we can dream!

Also, try to watch the CBS morning news tomorrow, Sunday. There is a segment filmed at Fall 2007 Houston Quilt Market that should air on the news program with Charles Osgood. I'm not sure which show that is, but probably the one that's on way before I usually climb out of bed on Sunday! Tomorrow, I will make an exception.

I was told that they have filmed footage and interviews from the market floor last Fall. So, if you see two ladies in the background, hiding their iced mochas in their Tutto bag and running around like two kids in a candy store, it's probably my mom and me!

Now, get back to quilting. Celebrate National Quilting Day with me!

Meet Martha

This is Martha! We picked her up in Salt Lake City, much to the complaints of Monte and my dad. Martha is modeling the Kitchen Trios Apron, made using the new fabric line, Posh.

Isn't Martha stunning?

Faster Fusible Applique

Many fusible applique projects include multiple pieces of the same shape. When fusing multiple pieces of the same shape, such as the sunflower petals in the Garden Friends border, there is a faster way to cut out the shapes. In this case, I had to make 90 sunflower petals (5 per flower, 18 flowers). Instead of tracing the shape 90 times, I only trace it 30 times, using this method.

First, divide the total shapes needed by 3. In this case, I need 90 total, and 90/3 is 30. So, I trace 30 petals onto the fusible web instead of all 90.
Next, determine a square or rectangle size that each piece will fit into. For example, each sunflower petal will fit in a 4 x 2 rectangle. Now I know I need enough fusible and fabric to cut 90 4x2 pieces.
Fuse the fusible to the wrong side of the fabric in one large piece if possible, or in several smaller pieces if easier. Then, using a rotary cutter and ruler, cut the fabric with fusible attached into the rectangles. In my case, I'm going to cut 90 4x2 pieces.
Now, you are ready to cut out your fusible shapes. Remove the paper backing from all rectangles EXCEPT the ones that actually have the shape traced onto them.
Layer the rectangles into groups of 3, wrong sides up. Each pile of rectangles will need the top piece to be one of the traced pieces, with paper still attached.

Now you are ready to cut out your shapes. Being careful that the under pieces don't move and slide around, cut the pieces out, using the top piece with the paper attached for a pattern. NOTE: for intricate pieces, such as snow flakes, it is a good idea to only cut 2 at a time to prevent sliding.

When you're done, you will have all of your pieces cut out, but have only done 1/3 of the tracing and cutting normally required.

Please leave me a question if this doesn't make sense!

Important Things To Pack

I just came across Kylee's list, written out by Bailey for Kylee to copy, of things to pack for the trip to Salt Lake City. Here it is, exactly as written:

Important (triple underlined) things to pack

toothbrush
underwear
Mariposa Movie
Baby Doll
clothes
toothbrush
slippers
lotion
Jami Valentines
shoes

At Water's Edge

You might notice that I've moved "At Water's Edge" up into the Current Projects list. I am still working on my sunflowers, but the new line came yesterday, and I've decided to start it too.

Use the link from the list at the left to view the kit for At Water's Edge. It is a really unique quilt that was elegant and stunning in real. So much so that I have thought about it since Fall Market in October. I am cutting kits for it, with the pieces already cut to size. This allows me to sell the kits for $30 less than I would have to charge if I included yardage, because some fabrics only require one small piece, yet call for a fat quarter. It also means you can start your quilt without any cutting. Who doesn't love that?

Viscious, but Entertaining, Rumors

If you read my blog because you're my friend, or you find it entertaining, thank you and disregard this posting. If you might be here to lurk around finding tid-bits of info to pass around and warp into rumors, read on!

It seems there is someone out there telling stories about Monte and I. What's even more annoying is that my mother-in-law feels the need to call us and probe for info, trying to "innocently" find out if any of it is true. It's insulting, to say the least, since the the rumors are so ridiculous they are comical.

Thank you to whoever starts these rumors, for reaffirming our decision to move away from Potlatch, and providing us with some good laughs.

Our moving doesn't seem to have stopped you from continuing your slander. It's really quite entertaining, listening to the stories you've made up. We don't care what you do with your free time. However, there is a section on gossiping in "The New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose" that you should read. I have the audio book and would be happy to let you borrow it. If that doesn't do the trick, maybe you should read my post on finding a hobby?. Clearly, you have too much free time.

Just to set the record straight, as if I need to, I am happy to inform you that we DO NOT throw darts at our children. It's more likely that they throw them at each other when we're not looking. Our garage has been a scary mess for a couple months now, making any kind of dart playing next to impossible anyways.

As for your report that I am taking a Jamaican vacation by myself, while Monte stays home and "gathers his thoughts" because we're considering divorce.........well, I wish I had known that since I could have saved a ton on airfare! Who goes to Jamaica alone anyways? Thanks for the laughs, we've gotten quite a few jokes at the thought of Monte "gathering his thoughts."

Monte has a great job, I have a quilt shop business which it turns out I'm pretty good at. We have a beautiful new house and 3 beautiful children, and we are loving life right now. It's too bad you can't handle our success without trying to bring us down. I'm sorry your life is so boring that you feel the need to drag us into the mud with you. Find someone else to gossip about. Better yet, stop gossiping and fix your own problems. I'd say we'll be thinking of you as we relax on the beach in a couple weeks, but we won't. Find your own life, and quit talking about ours.

Bye, bye, Simplicity & Christmas Lights

Since the idea of me finished the Simplicity quilt in this decade is utterly ridiculous, I passed it to my friend Susie. I'm hoping to have it done for a quilt show in April, and if anyone can do it, Susie can! I'd love to be greedy and try to do it myself, but seriously, how long has "Garden Friends" been the only project on my list?

I am working on it, I swear! I'm down to the outer sunflower border, and it's looking awesome. I have to get it quilted before I leave on vacation, along with about a million other things, and the clock is ticking! Not to mention that I keep finding more fabrics and more patterns to make. Sleep, housework, cooking, what are they???

I did reach my Christmas Lights limit yesterday, and finally attempted to finish taking them down. You might remember that I can't stand stale decorations. (You people that still not only have yours up, but TURNED ON, what are you thinking? You missed the memo: CHRISTMAS IS OVER!)
We were unable to take them down in January because they had frozen in ice to the gutters in many places. Finally yesterday, after pulling into the driveway and catching sight of them hanging off the house, I had had enough. So, the first thing I do is climb the 7' mountain of snow beside my porch, pull on the lights, and cut my lower lip with a broken bulb as they fell down. It's not too bad of a cut, but it did bleed a lot and make me look like I had been in a fight.
When Monte got home, all I had to say was "Go finish the lights. I cut my lip," and he had them down in 5 minutes. If I had known that was all it would take, I would've cut myself 2 months ago!

So, it's back to quilting today. Finishing Garden Friends is top on my list!

Cookie Lee Day

Yesterday was a Cookie Lee day for me. I met with a friend and old neighbor of mine to find out about starting my own Cookie Lee business. I am really excited about it, I love their jewelery and have missed it since we moved a couple years ago. If you don't know about Cookie Lee, check it out here! I will be hopefully having an open house to celebrate my start soon!

I went home and spent some time looking through the catalog, deciding what pieces to order to start out with. It's a hard decision, there's really nothing I don't like. "How much is this going to cost me?" was Monte's response. (He likes to pretend I don't have any money of my own, and if it keeps him happy, let him believe!)

If you're in my area and interested in a show, or just want a catalog, please let me know. I'm not one of those pushy sales people types, so I'm not going to keep harassing you about holding a show. However, I'll be happy to help you if you are interested. I love their jewelery, it's better quality than the stuff you can find in most stores at similar prices, and I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do!

New Fabric Today

I really thought that the new fabric would have settled down by now. However.......I just can't stop myself! While in Utah I visited a few quilt shops, caught a glimpse of some fabrics I hadn't ordered, and rushed home to order them! So, the next month is going to get crazy all over again with fabrics.

Today, the Posh fabric arrived.

Later this week, watch for At Water's Edge, followed closely by Wee Play.

Later this month, the new Kansas Troubles line, Garden Inspirations, is coming.

Overwhelmed yet? Well, I am! And that's not the half of it, that's just the ones we've put on the website so far.

Don't Mess With the Mocha!

If you know my mom very well, you probably know that she has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to stupidity. I inherited the same trait, but I haven't refined mine quite like my mom just yet. My mom has. Combine that with a hard and fast addiction to Iced Grande No-Whip, Extra Ice Mochas, and what you get is a hilarious Starbucks story! (Bear with me, it's a long one!)

Over the weekend, we visited my sister in West Jordan, Utah (right next to Salt Lake City). There happened to be a Starbucks especially close to my sister's house, and right on the route to and from shopping and the freeway. The next closest Starbucks was closed for renovations, so we frequented this one A LOT over the weekend. (Every 6 hours or so)

Before we even made it to my sister's house Friday morning, we stopped and refueled on caffeine. It was a fairly uneventful visit to an average Starbucks. Over the course of the next couple days, we visited the same Starbucks several times. After splitting up Saturday for some shopping, my mom told the following story to us at dinner:

While her and my dad were out shopping, they went through the Starbuck's drivethru. The drivethru was backed up with 5 or 6 cars, and as they waited they could see that there were problems. Drinks were passed out the window to several cars ahead of them, and then passed back. Apparently this branch of Starbucks has some trouble keeping orders straight. When Mom finally made it to the window, the guy took their payment card and then verified my mom's drink. The only problem? It wasn't the right drink. By this time, they had already waited in line for much longer than normal. After sitting at the window for a couple more minutes, during which time the guy continued to take orders from cars behind them, but didn't run my mom's card, my mom had reached her stupidity limit.
"Give me my card," she told the guy behind the window.
"What," he replied, obviously confused, "I haven't ran it yet!?"
"I know," says Mom, "Give it back, we're leaving." So he returns her card and my Mom drives off to find another Starbucks.

Later than evening, we decide to head out to the mall to exchange a pair of shoes. Of course, we can't go by the Starbucks without stopping for a caffeine fix. "I hope it's not the same guy," my mom says as we pull up to the menu, where we're greeted like this: "Welcome to Starbucks. How can I brighten your day?"

"Oh no," groans my mom, while my sister and I bust a gut laughing. "Maybe he won't recognize me. But really, how many people order an "Iced Grande, No-Whip, Xtra Ice Mocha?"
Then things go from bad to worse, as he proceeds to repeat our order over the speaker incorrectly. Already, my mom's stupidity meter is going off as she reorders the drinks, and my sister and I continue laughing. Finally, we get our total, $11 and something.
When we make it to the window, the guy opens the window and says, "$12.53, Oh, wait, did I say something else?" At this point, if there was any way my mom was going to be forgiving, now this guy doesn't have a prayer. Hasn't anyone told him that messing with the iced no-whip mocha with xtra ice is life threatening?
"Yes, you said something else," my mom says, and now we're all laughing harder.

Then, the guy asks, "Were you here earlier? Did you drive off?" which sends Jami and I into even more fits of laughter.
"Yes," my mom admits, and then the guy wins stupidity award of the year as he asks, "Can I ask why?"

My mom gives the guy her ultimate death stare and replies, "If you have to ask why, then I'm not going to bother explaining it to you." This leaves him speachless with his jaw on the floor.

Really, there's only so much stupidity one can take. But now the story gets unbelievable, because the next thing this guy does is bring us all WHITE iced mochas. My sister ordered a white mocha, but mine and my mom's are supposed to be regular mochas.
"Those aren't WHITE mochas, are they?" demands my mom before he even makes it to the window. See, we can tell by the color that they aren't right. It comes from years of Starbucks addiction.
"Uh, uh, no, I don't think so," they guys stutters. But alas, they are. So we're forced to wait even longer as he has the girl remake our drinks. Apparantley he was too traumatized to finish, because he dissappears and the girl brings our corrected drinks to the window.

The next morning, Sunday, we stop by this same Starbucks on our way out of town to head home. This time I'm driving my car, and Mom's in the passenger seat. "There's no way it'll be the same guy," we're thinking. But when we get there, we hear "Welcome to Starbucks. How can I brighten your day?"

This sends my mom digging through her purse for the new sunglasses she had purchased the night before. "Oh Lord," she says, "Put your window visor down." As if this guy isn't probably already on to us since we ordered "Iced grande no-whip mochas with xtra ice."

We make it out of the drive thru without a scene this time, although I do have to repeat my order twice, the second time very loudly and slowly. After we got our drinks, I had the urge to tell him that he could rest easy, we were headed home for good.

I don't know what the problem was at this Starbucks. I have never received such bad service so many times at one branch. I have also never had such bad service and not been apologized to or given a coupon for a free drink. Around home, there is an occassional glitch and our drink is wrong, or too slow, and we always get a coupon and apology. I'm not out to get free drinks, this only happens about once a year, and it's usually not even bad enough to require a coupon. They give them out anyways, which speaks to their high customer service standards. However, this particular West Jordan Starbucks doesn't seem to know about this policy. Perhaps they forgot to close for training a couple of weeks ago?

Warning-Really Good Cake!

I had a moment of weakness last night, brought on by a false sense of safety after losing weight over the weekend, and I made this cake:

Best Ever Chocolate Fudge Layer Cake.

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT, make this cake if you have little or no self restraint, like me! This cake turned out sooooo good, and it was super easy. It is so good, I'm sure it will probably be gone tonight. That weight I lost over the weekend? I think I found it.

Quilt in a Cup-Product of the Week

Ta Da! This week's product of the week is the Quilt in a Cup! What more could you ask for, but a combination of quilting and a way to drink espresso? (or your drink of choice) These kits come with the cup, which is large enough to hold a grande espresso, and the precut batting. You add your choice of fabrics, scraps work perfectly, and create an insert to make your cup unique, quilt-as-you-go style! This takes less than 1/2 an hour, and when you're finished you can drink in style, or give as a great gift! Even beginner's will find this easy. I think I need one for every season!

Road Trip!

Oh, I've been such a baaaaad blogger!!!! Missing 3 days in a row, what was I thinking? Well.....I was thinking ROAD TRIP! I was really thinking road trip all week last week, but I had to keep it top secret since the point of the road trip was to surprise my Sister and her husband by crashing my nephew's 1st birthday! Yes, it's true, not even 700 miles can keep us from coming over uninvited.

My girls love their Aunt Jami, and I couldn't keep it a secret from them. They were diligently making lists of what they were going to pack as early as Monday. So, come Thursday evening my family of 5, plus my parents and my brother, left Deary at 7:15pm and headed for Salt Lake City! I was super prepared. I'd been to Walmart that afternoon and picked up a double screen portable DVD player, plus 5 new movies, snacks, and MP3 batteries for Bailey. There was no way I was going to be stuck in a car for 11 hours with bored kids!

It actually took us 2 cars to get there, so we took radios to talk to each other. It was like a comical version of the Griswald Family Vacation with a little bit of Smokey and the Bandit thrown in. (Without the wood paneled station wagon and dead Grandma, of course) Although, there might have been a dead Grandma if that West Jordan Starbucks employee had brought his gun to work.....more about that later!

We drove all night, and after hitting morning rush hour traffic on the edges of Salt Lake, we finally arrived around 8:30am. Hopefully they were happy to see us, I guess if they move and forget to send us their forwarding address we'll know why! It was a short but fun trip. I even managed to lose a pound despite eating burgers, pizza, birthday cake, and an unGodly amount of Starbucks!

We drove home Sunday, it took all day and was much worse than the drive down. The kids were AWAKE this time, making it more difficult to keep them occupied. By the time we arrived home, Monte had informed me that he would not be returning unless it was by plane. I must say, I agree, although I think he was just chomping at the bit to get home in time to watch the season premiere of Ax Men.

So, back to the schedule here! I will be working on catching up today. Watch for more posts soon!
